You’ve been hit by another car, now what?
Take a deep breath
The first thing you should do after you experience a car accident is to take a deep break and do your best to remain calm. You are likely going to be confused and rushing head-long into any direction could make the situation worse.
Does anyone need help?
After you’ve taken a moment or two to get your bearings, make sure everyone in your vehicle is ok and doesn’t need an ambulance. Once your people are ok, check on the other vehicle and do the same thing. If you’re not sure if somebody needs medical attention, call for help just to be safe. Regardless, you should dial 911 and get a police officer on the scene as soon as possible.
Get out of the way
If the damage is fairly minor and it is safe to do so, try to move both vehicles out of traffic. In the event the vehicles can’t be moved, make sure everyone is standing somewhere safe to wait for police to arrive.
As soon as you know everyone is ok and safe, start making notes about the accident. This is when you should start collecting the names of the other driver and their vehicle information, especially the license plate number. If possible, start taking as many photos as possible of the scene without touching anything. Get photos of the damage to all of the vehicles involved. If your car or theirs is still in traffic, don’t take any risks going out where it isn’t safe.
Start a claim
Finally, the last thing you should do is to contact your regular insurance agent or company. They will give the needed information to start filing a claim.
The most important things to remember in these stressful situations is to try to remain calm and stay out of traffic as much as possible. Once everyone is ok, contact Heritage Toyota and we can start helping you find a new or pre-owned vehicle to replace the one that was wrecked.
